Desk Study for Biodiversity Credit Potential Assessment in 5 Priority Landscapes

1.    Background

Stakeholders widely recognize that Multi-Use Forestry (Multi Usaha Kehutanan – MUK) is the optimal management model to achieve a regenerative forestry business. It improves forest ecosystem health through land rehabilitation, enhances biodiversity, fosters inclusive social roles, and boosts economic contributions.

Since 2023, the Kadin Regenerative Forest Business Hub (Kadin RFBH) has initiated the expansion of the MUK model by incorporating a new environmental service potential: biodiversity credits. To fully understand this mechanism, Kadin RFBH has engaged in dialogues, field visits to Colombia, seminars, and joined the Biodiversity Credit Working Group.

To explore the implementation of biodiversity credits, Kadin RFBH plans to assess the biodiversity potential in 5 priority landscapes for MUK pilots:

  • Landscape Bentala, East Kalimantan
  • Landscape Jambi: Connecting Bukit Tigapuluh and Hutan Harapan landscapes
  • Landscape Lampung
  • Landscape Kubu Raya
  • Landscape Seruyan

To realize this plan, a comprehensive desk study assessment is required to evaluate these five landscapes and identify specific forest concession companies (Perizinan Berusaha Pemanfaatan Hutan – PBPH) with the highest biodiversity value.

2.    Objective

To conduct a desk study assessment that provides an initial baseline of the 5 priority landscapes and identifies specific PBPH holders with high-potential biodiversity value to be developed as Biodiversity Credit pilots.

3.    Scope of Work & Deliverables

The consultant is expected to deliver two main outputs:

·        Output 1: Landscape-Based Assessment Report

  • A comparative analysis of the biodiversity credit potential across the 5 priority MUK landscapes.

·        Output 2: Pilot Project Identification Report

  • Detailed assessment of potential PBPH-based locations within the priority
  • Analysis of the highest biodiversity values, potential scale (hectares/metrics), and implementation timeline.

4.    Analytical Framework

The consultant is required to establish a robust and robust analytical framework to assess and rank the biodiversity credit potential across the 5 priority landscapes and selected PBPH concession holders. The desk study must integrate, at least ecological indicators, spatial analysis, and social safeguards, e.g.:
