Summary job description
Our Technical team oversees Blue Ventures’ technical pillars (Secure Rights, Community-Based Fisheries Management, Food Security and Financial Inclusion). It supports the use of data for decision-making, providing tools, training, and guidance to partners and Blue Ventures’ staff around the world. This team integrates expertise and deep practical experience with pragmatism and a desire to enable others to deliver lasting change, by distilling global best practices and knowledge into usable tools, appropriate training, and responsive guidance and support. The team is also responsible for delivering
online and face-to-face peer learning exchanges and knowledge-sharing events across the organisation, in addition to overseeing technical publications. We are currently recruiting a Data Science Officer to support our efforts in assisting local partner organisations in Indonesia. The role will entail providing technical assistance to partner organisations involved in community-based fisheries management and sharing technical and marine resource management experiences. Reporting to the Data Science Senior Officer, this is a full-time role based in Blue Ventures’ Denpasar office, with regular travel to work closely with colleagues, partners, field teams and communities. The Data Science Officer will provide bespoke training and technical support to local partners in all aspects of fisheries assessment and management, including monitoring and evaluation of landings − particularly in the design and use of mobile-based data collection systems − and supporting local partners in efforts to assist communities in the management of target small-scale fisheries. Additional responsibilities will include supporting scoping visits and working with partner organisations and colleagues in Blue Ventures’ conservation team to plan community exchanges to share learning and best practices in tropical small-scale fisheries
management and locally-led marine conservation. fisheries, marine conservation, and development sectors in Indonesia, a proven track record of project management and partnership building, and excellent communication skills. Practical experience of community-based conservation and development initiatives in Indonesia will be critical to the role.

Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Training Programme
– Training & Capacity Building: Train partners in using the mobile-based data collection system.
– Support Data Quality Assurance: Ensure the accuracy and reliability of data entered into the system.
– Support Data Monitoring & Visualisation: Monitor the data visualised on the dashboard to maintain real-time accuracy and usability.
– Support Fisheries Data Management Development: Support the enhancement and development of comprehensive fisheries data management systems.
– Support Feedback Integration: Gather and incorporate feedback from partners and communities to continuously improve the data collection and management systems.
– Support Data Feedback Session: Data support for recommendations for fisheries management with data as the basis for decision-making.
– Support the partnership team in reviewing technical aspects of partners’ work plans and reports.
– Support technical exchanges for staff, partners, and communities.
Documentation & Communication
– Evaluating and documenting key learning, best practices and broader contextual learning around fisheries management experiences.
– Working with partner organisations and Blue Ventures’ conservation team to plan and coordinate outreach and communication efforts around partnership activities, including blogs and news articles, as required.
Skills and Experience Required
– Undergraduate level qualification in therelevant subject (rural development, environmental, fisheries or conservation science) or at least three years practical experience in field-based marine conservation.
– Experience in small-scale fisheries monitoring and assessment, ideally through participatory (community-based) methods.
– Experience in teaching and mentoring in data systems, analysis and interpretation.
– Experience with mobile data collection systems (ideally including Open Data Kit and Kobo Toolbox).
– Excellent knowledge of MS Office.
– Experience and understanding of how to use Monitoring and Evaluation in development work.
– Experience in data management system development.
– Experience in data visualisation (Tableau, Google Data Studio).

– Experience in tropical developing contexts, including knowledge of marine environmental and local cultural contexts.
– Fluency in local or national language and professional English.
