Social Researcher Abt Associates has been selected by the Millennium Challenge Account-Indonesia to implement the one-year Participatory Mapping and Planning (PMaP) 6 project. Through this project Abt Associates will help over 300 rural villages in fifteen districts throughout the country to delineate and demarcate their boundaries and map their resources to attract future investment in areas that will improve rural livelihoods in an environmentally sustainable manner. In this project, Abt Associates and its team of Indonesian specialists and subcontractors will implement the 21-step Village Boundary Setting and Resource Mapping (VBS/RM) methodology in collaboration with local communities and government through a participatory process.  Abt Associates is seeking short term Social Researcher to conduct rapid social and land tenure appraisal and stakeholder mapping in assigned areas of NTB. The Social Researcher will conduct a short term consultancy reporting to the Stakeholder Engagement Specialist based in Jakarta and the outputs of the assignment will serve as the foundation for future VBS/RM implementation. The position requires a field work in NTB.Roles and Responsibilitiesa. Conduct a rapid assessment on the socio-economic characteristics of the selected sub-district; including identification of stakeholders in each village covering government agencies, companies, NGOs working in the village as well as the different groups within the village (including women, vulnerable groups, and indigenous groups) in order to ensure inclusion of all relevant stakeholders; b. Conduct a preliminary appraisal on the land use and tenure issues of each selected sub-district, including existing tenurial systems, descriptions of indigenous groups, potential land and boundary disputes, and indigenous/customary territories (adat land);c. Carry out field work using qualitative research methods, including archival research (statistical annual reports for each kecamatan, monographs on the area, etc.), interviews and focus groups, rapid stakeholder mapping (see Rapid Tenure Assessment [RaTA] published by ICRAF); and d. Produce a summary report of findings that includes: key people, groups, and organizations; socio-economic characteristics; and relationships and roles within the community land tenure issues, including tenurial history, potential land and/or boundary disputes, adat territories, or historical land issues.  Minimum Qualifications a. Academic degree in social science/research, anthropology, development studies, geography, or related field; b. At least three years of experience in participatory and social research using social and gender analysis in work; b. Strong knowledge of rural land issues, indigenous/customary (adat) land tenure, and territorial claims;c. Existing knowledge of the local socio-economic context would be an advantage; d. Ability to frequently travel to remote locations in Indonesia;e.
